Guardian Alliance Guide
Elder Sera alliance path is the most content-rich route through CONTRABAND: Edge of the Fold. This guide covers every decision and checkpoint needed to reach +100 Guardian reputation and unlock the full Guardian narrative.
Why the Guardian path
Elder Sera alliance unlocks: unique ships (Guardian Skiff, Guardian Arkship), unique crew (Echo of a Guardian), the Guardian Fragment relic, the sanctum access, the Ritual of the Seventeen Mirrors, and the Rift branches ending at highest quality. It also prevents the Black Fleet alliance path entirely. This is the canonical "good player" route through the game.
Prologue: the required foundation
You must save the Guardian child in the prologue. Any other choice caps your maximum Guardian reputation at approximately +50, which is not enough to complete the alliance properly. If you did not save the child, revisit and redo the prologue before proceeding.
Peeking in the crate + saving the child grants: +25 reputation, the Child crew member (available from Chapter 2), and dialogue variants throughout the game. This baseline is non-negotiable.
Chapter 1 reputation building
Chapter 1 provides limited but important reputation opportunities:
- Listen to Vex at Keros-4 — +50 Vex reputation (separate track), does not directly affect Guardian rep but establishes alignment.
- Complete one Guardian Courier mission — +10 rep. Appears after meeting Vex.
- Refuse the Traveling Merchant's Black Fleet offer — +5 rep. Subtle but counts.
- Missing Pilot side quest — Complete it and turn in the relic to the Guardian Archivist for +20 rep (vs selling the relic for 15,000cr).
Target: ~60-70 rep by end of Chapter 1. This unlocks Chapter 2 main path.
Chapter 2: the sanctum
Chapter 2 is where the alliance formalizes. Key decisions:
- Accept Vex's package (Vex Prism) — Critical item for later chapters. +20 Vex rep.
- Answer the Guardian call — This is what takes you to the Sanctum. Declining stalls the alliance path.
- Speak with the Guardian elder — Choose "We are allies" dialogue option. +30 rep.
- Attend the initiate ceremony — Optional scene, +15 rep if attended.
- Do NOT sell the Starforge Fragment — Selling to the Hooded Buyer costs -80 rep. Permanent path damage.
If you save the child and make all correct Chapter 2 choices, reputation typically reaches +80 by end of Chapter 2. This qualifies you for the Ritual.
The Ritual of the Seventeen Mirrors
At +80 Guardian reputation, the Guardians invite you to the ritual in the Sanctum's lowest chamber. The ritual:
- You sit on a central dais surrounded by seventeen polished mirrors.
- Each mirror reflects a different branch version of you.
- You are asked to "accept" one alternate self — taking their memories.
The ritual completion grants: Guardian Fragment relic (+10 max HP, Black Fleet Mark immunity), unique dialogue unlock with Vex, and locks out the Black Fleet alliance path. The process is not reversible without branch revisit.
Chapter 3: Lead A or B
Lead A (Black Fleet Reach Black Site) is the Guardian-aligned lead. It contains:
- The wired Guardian prisoner decision — Choose "Unwire her and take both" for +25 Guardian rep (best outcome).
- Partial Starforge coordinates
- Opportunity to fight the Black Fleet Dreadnought for the Giant-Slayer achievement
Lead B (Oracle) is neutral but acceptable — the Oracle works with the Guardians to close the Rift. Lead C is not Guardian-aligned and may cost reputation.
Reaching +100 reputation
By end of Chapter 3, most players reach +90 to +100 Guardian rep if they've followed the above path. To hit +100 exactly:
- Complete all Guardian Courier chain missions (+40 total)
- Save the wired prisoner (+25)
- Attend Ritual of the Seventeen Mirrors (reputation lock + dialogue)
- Refuse every Core Worlds mission that targets Guardians (+10 each, up to 4 missions)
At +100, unique content unlocks: a personal audience with Shan of the First Loom (Chapter 4), an extended dialogue with the grown Lyra, and a cosmetic reward — the Guardian Bracelet that visually glows on the player character model.
Chapter 4 and the Rift branches ending
With +100 rep + Guardian Fragment, the Rift branches ending is straightforward. The "Prune" option in the c4_temptation scene is explicit and clean. The Chapter 5 Sacred variant (if you saved the child) includes the photograph scene and Guardian initiate gift delivery.
Common mistakes
- Hiring Veth the Defector — -20 Guardian rep for his presence. Only hire if actively pursuing anti-Black Fleet combat specialization.
- Selling the Starforge Fragment — -80 rep. Permanent.
- Accepting Core Worlds bounty on Guardian targets — -15 rep per bounty.
- Skipping the Ritual — Doable but removes significant content.
