Corvette
The Corvette is the most expensive Rare-tier ship in CONTRABAND: Edge of the Fold, and it earns that premium by being the only ship in the tier with zero obvious weaknesses. Its 220 HP, 160 shield, balanced 1.0 speed and agility, and 30 cargo slots put it in the top third of every metric — a true generalist that compromises nothing. Unlike the Gunship (which sacrifices speed), the Freight Hauler (which sacrifices combat), or the Skiff (which sacrifices HP), the Corvette is the Rare-tier ship that does everything adequately.
The Corvette is designed for naval escort operations. In the Core Worlds Alliance's fleet doctrine, Corvettes accompany merchant convoys through high-risk space, capable of both engaging light threats directly and calling for reinforcements against heavier ones. Civilian Corvettes inherit this versatility. A Corvette pilot can run cargo in the morning, engage in combat in the afternoon, and scout a contested system in the evening without needing to switch ships.
Strategy and role
The Corvette's role is "second ship" — the one you buy when your specialized ship (Freight Hauler for traders, Gunship for fighters) cannot handle a particular mission. Its versatility means it rarely excels at anything, but it is rarely catastrophically bad either. This makes the Corvette the ship of choice for players whose playstyle changes frequently, or for players unwilling to commit to a single playstyle direction.
Abilities:
- Broadside — Fires a spread of medium-damage kinetic shots across 180 degrees. Effective against multi-target encounters, less effective at single targets.
- Shield Boost — Restores 40 shield. Three uses per combat. The workhorse ability.
- Convoy Signal — If allied ships are present in the current system, they arrive in 2 turns as reinforcements. Only functional in Verge systems by default; Chapter 3 side quest unlocks it for Keros.
- Maneuver Thrusters — +0.3 agility for 2 turns. Turns the Corvette into a pseudo-Interceptor briefly.
How to acquire
The Corvette is sold at every Core Worlds shipyard for the standard 78,000cr. Tellen's Rest occasionally runs a "loaner program" for pilots with Core reputation ≥ 40, allowing a free 30-day Corvette loan in exchange for completing 3 specified missions. The loaner cannot be kept after the 30 days unless purchased at full price, but the loan period is useful for players testing whether the Corvette playstyle suits them before committing.
Used Corvettes are rare in secondary markets because they hold value well — owners who have one tend to keep them. When one does appear at Keros-7 or Sorn-9, it typically sells for 65,000-72,000cr with minor cosmetic wear.
Upgrade path
The Corvette upgrades naturally to the Assault Frigate (120,000cr Epic), which is essentially a Corvette++ with more HP, more firepower, and better weapon loadouts. The Voidreaver (220,000cr Epic) is an alternative upgrade for players who loved the Corvette's balance but want a more experimental, high-end feel. Both Epic upgrades preserve the generalist philosophy.
Best crew pairings
- Kairos (Gunner) — +15% damage on Broadside's spread produces massive cumulative damage in multi-target fights.
- Mara Voss (Navigator) — -15% fuel cost is especially valuable because the Corvette tends to be flown on varied routes.
- Tezze (Diplomat) — +15% mission pay synergizes with the Corvette's ability to accept any mission type.
Lore and design notes
The Corvette's model (Spaceship (8).glb) shows a classic naval corvette silhouette — longer than it is wide, with weapon mounts at regular intervals along the dorsal line. This is deliberately archaic. The design is nearly 200 years old in the game's timeline, continuously upgraded rather than redesigned. Core Worlds naval tradition holds that the Corvette hull shape is "correct" and modern variants are tweaks rather than replacements.
Flying a Corvette triggers subtle recognition from Core Worlds NPCs. Dock workers greet Corvette pilots with respectful familiarity. Admiral Tellen addresses Corvette-flying players as "Captain" instead of "pilot" — a small but meaningful detail that reflects the ship's naval heritage. Some players specifically maintain a Corvette as their primary ship for the RP benefits even after upgrading other combat capabilities.
Comparison with other Rare-tier ships
The Corvette is the best generalist in the tier. Against the Strike Fighter (68,000cr), it has more HP and cargo but less agility. Against the Gunship MK-II (42,000cr), it has better speed and agility at the cost of less raw HP. Against the Freight Hauler (55,000cr), it has half the cargo but meaningfully better combat. Against the Skiff (35,000cr), it has much higher HP but loses the unique Weaver abilities. The Corvette's 78,000cr price reflects its status as the "best ship in tier if you can afford it."
