Pure trader build

Pure trader build is one of the most popular character builds in CONTRABAND. This guide explains what it does, when to use it, and how to build it from scratch.

What this build does

This build optimizes for a specific play style. It is not the absolute strongest build in the game (no build is) but it is one of the most consistent across all 5 chapters. Pilots who commit to it tend to finish runs faster than pilots who try to multi-class.

Required ship

The build runs best on a hull with the right slot configuration. Pick a ship that supports the build's weapon and module priorities. The build's effectiveness drops noticeably on hulls with the wrong slot count.

Recommended weapons

Stack weapons that complement each other rather than identical copies. Most pilots run two of the build's primary weapon and one of a complementary type for shield-stripping. The exact mix depends on the boss content you face.

Recommended crew

The crew bonuses that synergize with this build add roughly 15–25% effective output if chosen correctly. Avoid crew whose bonuses do not multiply with the build's core mechanic.

Playing the build

This build has a learning curve. The first hour with it can feel weaker than your previous build. Push through — the build comes online once you internalize its rhythm.

Counters and weaknesses

Every build has counters. This one struggles against enemies that punish its core assumption. When you meet such enemies, switch to a fallback tactic rather than forcing the build's signature move.

When to swap

Most pilots run this build through the late mid-game and then swap to an endgame build for the final chapters. The transition is natural — you will know when the build stops outperforming the alternatives.
